When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Tampa Bay Institute of Oral Surgery and Dental Implants surgeons remove thousands of teeth a year. Surgical extraction of wisdom teeth is an “everyday” procedure in our offices that are located conveniently for patients in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk and Orange Counties. Florida residents come to us from beyond these counties, as well, to see our expert oral surgeons.

Your dentist or orthodontist may have recommended that your or your teen’s wisdom teeth be removed. The molars we call “wisdom teeth” are third molars in the back corners of the jaws. They begin to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. There are four primary reasons why adults have their wisdom teeth removed:

  • To make space for orthodontic correction of crowded teeth
  • To relieve pressure on the surrounding bone tissue and roots of adjacent teeth
  • To eliminate gum disease and dental decay that can easily develop in the hard-to-clean back corners of the mouth
  • To address the concern that they will eventually put pressure on surrounding bone tissue and tooth roots, even if this has not become a problem yet

Wisdom teeth should be removed before they become problematical. Wisdom teeth removal is easier when you are still a teenager. This is because the teeth have not become permanently established in the jaw bone. Removal of wisdom teeth in adults and removal of impacted wisdom teeth that have not erupted does not have to be a problem when you are in the hands of a skilled oral surgeon. Our surgeon will counsel you about the need for extraction and make removal comfortable with minimal impact for fast healing. It is not uncommon for our patients to be amazed at how little swelling and post-procedure discomfort they have.

We offer a variety of sedation options, so you can rest in total comfort while the procedure is performed. Your initial consultation will be complimentary. We invite you to give us a call today.
