Placement of Orthodontic TADS (Temporary Anchorage Devices)

Dr. Renato Aves of Tampa Bay Institute for Oral Surgery and Dental Implants works with referring orthodontists to surgically place temporary anchorage devices (TADs). These devices are miniature bone screws with special heads that provide anchorage points for elastics that produce orthodontic movement. TADs have only been in use for the last decade. Prior to this time, patients had orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) or their dentist used anchors banded to teeth and external fixation devices like “head gear” to create the forces needed to treat open bite and overbite occlusions. TADs are also used to intrude teeth that have super erupted. In the past, these teeth would have been extracted or would have had root canal therapy, been cut down, and then crowned to the level most appropriate for the surrounding teeth. Now, in cases where a tooth does not erupt, the impacted tooth can be surgically exposed and bracketed, then moved using a TAD.

TAD Placement by Dr. Renato Aves

Placing TADs in the maxilla or mandible is an easy and fast process using local anesthesia. The gum tissue is numbed with topical anesthetic before local anesthetic is injected. The entire process is over in a matter of minutes. We offer sedation options for patients who prefer dental procedures to be done under sedation with nitrous oxide, IV moderate sedation, or an orally taken sedative. Post-operative recovery is also fast and relatively pain free. Many patients only need to wear TADs for a few months, and then their TADs are easily removed by Dr. Aves.
