At Tampa Bay Institute of Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, we sometimes get calls from patients who have been told they aren’t good candidates for dental implant replacement of a missing tooth. When they come in for a complimentary (no fee) consultation, our surgeons thoroughly evaluate their situation. The outcome of these second opinion consultations is commonly the news that yes they can.
Many of these patients have worn a fixed bridge or removable denture for years and now wonder if they can have an implant. Oftentimes, it is the appearance and diminished fit of their appliance that motivates them to call. The good news for almost all of them is that with a bone graft our surgeons will be able to restore the bone volume, insert an implant, and enable the patient’s smile to be restored with an implant prosthesis.
Today’s highly specialized materials and surgical techniques allow us to restore lost bone tissue. Bone graft surgery is performed under moderate IV Sedation, post-operative discomfort in the gum tissue lasts only a few days, and the minor pain is easily managed with pain relievers. After the graft has integrated with the bone during a healing period of a few weeks, an implant is placed in the bone. After the implant has integrated with the bone during an osseointegration period of a few weeks, a natural appearing crown is secured on the implant. This entire process takes a few months, but the resulting beautiful smile and strong chewing function last a lifetime.
If multiple or even all natural teeth have been lost, implant solutions are available for optimal quality of life. At the Tampa Bay Institute of Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, our surgeons perform thousands of bone grafting and implant placement procedures a year, using the latest technology and highest-quality materials. Because they are experienced oral surgeons (highly trained specialists), they have been performing implant related surgeries for years and have the experience and technology that general dentists do not have.
